Exchange Portfolio | IPA
Sean O'Colmáin Scholarship One of the peace dividends is a resurgance of interest in the exchange of young people interested in studying languages, culture or working as au pairs. There has been a noticeable increase of interest by UK and Continental parents in Ireland as a friendly country where their teenage children may be placed in the care of a police family. Similarly, Irish parents feel more confident in placing their children in the care of such a family in the UK or the Continent. The fact that participation is confined to police families has the added attraction of minimising the cultural shock to young people finding themselves in unfamiliar surroundings. Youth exchange is not confined to exchange between foreign countries but it also applies within the section. The earliest possible
application for exchange should be made by parents so that a suitable
family may be selected. Each Region is obliged to set up a list of
families willing to exchange teenage children. As strict
International Rules have been promulgated for the proper operation of
Youth Exchange placings those Rules are reproduced hereunder (Youth
Exchange Rules). Intending applicants should study those
directives carefully before applying for exchange facilities. Both
nationally and internationally Youth Exchange comes under the wing of the
Social Commission. ______________________________________ IPA Ceol,
